Summary

A trans boy determined to prove his gender to his traditional Latinx family summons a ghost who refuses to leave in Aiden Thomas's paranormal YA debut Cemetery Boys, described by Entertainment Weekly as "groundbreaking。"

Yadriel has summoned a ghost, and now he can't get rid of him。

When his traditional Latinx family has problems accepting his true gender, Yadriel becomes determined to prove himself a real brujo。 With the help of his cousin and best friend Maritza, he performs the ritual himself, and then sets out to find the ghost of his murdered cousin and set it free。

However, the ghost he summons is actually Julian Diaz, the school's resident bad boy, and Julian is not about to go quietly into death。 He's determined to find out what happened and tie off some loose ends before he leaves。 Left with no choice, Yadriel agrees to help Julian, so that they can both get what they want。 But the longer Yadriel spends with Julian, the less he wants to let him leave。

I normally can't get into YA anymore but this was so good。 I loved the inclusion of a variety of different Latine cultures especially。 The resolution made no sense to me honestly but I don't care, let these gays be in love。 We also love our vegan queen Maritza。 I normally can't get into YA anymore but this was so good。 I loved the inclusion of a variety of different Latine cultures especially。 The resolution made no sense to me honestly but I don't care, let these gays be in love。 We also love our vegan queen Maritza。 。。。more

YESSSS。 OMG。 YES。 Literally so good。 And it held so many different depths and dimensions than i thought it would when i began reading it? I finished it in one sitting。 And the TRANS REPERSENTATION YESSS。 LOVE TO SEE IT。 The only reason i took off a star is because i just felt like something was missing? i don’t know i just felt very unsatisfied in the end。

Cemetery Boys holds so much love and sadness and hope in its pages, I'm at a loss for words trying to explain how much I enjoyed this story。 100% I was a weepy mess for the last ~70 pages, so I'm glad I didn't finish this at work haha。 But in all seriousness this was such a meaningful book filled with so much angst and yearning, and the different ways it means to be a family and yourself。Yadriel's experiences as a trans boy within his community and the larger world are so well written。 This is a Cemetery Boys holds so much love and sadness and hope in its pages, I'm at a loss for words trying to explain how much I enjoyed this story。 100% I was a weepy mess for the last ~70 pages, so I'm glad I didn't finish this at work haha。 But in all seriousness this was such a meaningful book filled with so much angst and yearning, and the different ways it means to be a family and yourself。Yadriel's experiences as a trans boy within his community and the larger world are so well written。 This is a story about trans visibility and acceptance, and it makes me so happy to know this book exists。 I also loved Julian's character, as he made such a complementary opposite for Yadriel and helped to shift his perspectives on different things。 Watching their relationship develop was such a complex feeling of joy mixed with sadness at knowing they were in two different worlds。I did end up predicting part of the ending but that just made it all the more satisfying and resulted in me crying more。 The world was well fleshed out, and the characters fully realized。 I wish I could just wrap Yadriel and Julian up in a blanket and protect them (even though I know they're perfectly capable all by themselves)。 Aiden Thomas' debut was such a joy to read and I'm so happy I'll be able to revisit this world time and again。 。。。more

what a beautiful, culturally rich, tender, and emotional story。 I loved the twist at the end, even though it hurt because of who it was to Yadriel。 So many important topics were covered like trans and lgbtq+ acceptance, racism, deportation, etc, all woven into a really beautiful story about romance, family traditions, and friendships。 This was like nothing I’ve ever read before and if I enjoyed it this much I can’t imagine how latinx lgbtq+ youth would feel while reading this。 Such great represe what a beautiful, culturally rich, tender, and emotional story。 I loved the twist at the end, even though it hurt because of who it was to Yadriel。 So many important topics were covered like trans and lgbtq+ acceptance, racism, deportation, etc, all woven into a really beautiful story about romance, family traditions, and friendships。 This was like nothing I’ve ever read before and if I enjoyed it this much I can’t imagine how latinx lgbtq+ youth would feel while reading this。 Such great representation and I love they way Yadriel saw Julian as such a bright loving boy。 I adore them both。Admittedly this was a little bit young for me, and the couple of errors really peeved me more than they probably should have, and there was kind of a lot of info dumping in the beginning, but the second half really picked up the pace and kept me captivated! Also, the dust jacket artwork and the embossing under the dust jacket are insanely beautiful!!! 。。。more

3 stars。Fabulous for the nonchalant but fierce representation it gives, otherwise, unfortunately, a little mediocre。 A very predictable story that had me smiling and pleasantly bored all throughout。 Not bad!

4。5 :) Julian’s character was so adorable。 🥺 And when Maritza saved Yadriel’s life I was laughing so hard when she said “and I didn’t even use animal blood bitch” 😭💀

4。5 stars rounded up to 5。 A few pacing problems, and I spotted the villain a mile out, but the story is lovely and up-lifting。

Very cute and incredibly unique book。 I haven't read much YA fiction in some time, and it was nice to find one that, while simple, was very engrossing。 Stand-alone in its use of almost a completely queer cast of characters, mixed in with the traditions of Day of the Dead。 I did figure out the mystery about half way through the book which was a little disappointing but I'm still happy with the ending。 Very cute and incredibly unique book。 I haven't read much YA fiction in some time, and it was nice to find one that, while simple, was very engrossing。 Stand-alone in its use of almost a completely queer cast of characters, mixed in with the traditions of Day of the Dead。 I did figure out the mystery about half way through the book which was a little disappointing but I'm still happy with the ending。 。。。more

wow!!!! i was so ready to rate this book 4 stars。。。 I mean, I liked it a lot, the romance was so cute, and the representation was completely on point, but then the ending happened and wow!!the thing is the ending was almost predictable, and yet not at the same time。 i'm so happy with the way it ended that it gets 5 stars from me, despite the sometimes lacklustre writing and scenes that go on for a little too long, still amazing! gonna be thinking about this one for a long time wow!!!! i was so ready to rate this book 4 stars。。。 I mean, I liked it a lot, the romance was so cute, and the representation was completely on point, but then the ending happened and wow!!the thing is the ending was almost predictable, and yet not at the same time。 i'm so happy with the way it ended that it gets 5 stars from me, despite the sometimes lacklustre writing and scenes that go on for a little too long, still amazing! gonna be thinking about this one for a long time 。。。more

This novel was perfection! Yadriel was so cute and his desire to prove himself as a brujo was heart-wrenching。 I only wanted the best for him。 He was not the only character I fell for in this story though, I also found myself enamored by Maritza and Julian。 Each of these side characters felt whole and real and I wanted to know them as much as Yadriel。 To digress, I could not put this novel down。 It's characters, culture, mystery and magic system entranced me。 I never wanted to leave this world。 This novel was perfection! There is nothing worse than your own expectations ruining your enjoyment of a book, which was the case here。 Was this book bad in any way? Absolutely not。 Did I go into this book expecting it to be one of my new all-time favorite books? Yes。 This rating is indicative of me and not at all of the book itself。 Will I be reading all other books this author comes out with? You betcha!

I’ve started to give YA quite a wide berth recently as I have generally been left a bit disappointed, but when the book is getting such recognition and attention for specific reasons then I will still keep it on my list of books to read。 And I am really glad that I did in this case, as this book was captivating and very well written。 It tells the story of a trans boy who, born into a family who worship Lady Death and are able to see spirits and heal injuries, is desperate to claim the gifts give I’ve started to give YA quite a wide berth recently as I have generally been left a bit disappointed, but when the book is getting such recognition and attention for specific reasons then I will still keep it on my list of books to read。 And I am really glad that I did in this case, as this book was captivating and very well written。 It tells the story of a trans boy who, born into a family who worship Lady Death and are able to see spirits and heal injuries, is desperate to claim the gifts given to the sons of the community。 However there are dark forces at large, and he is accidentally stuck with the spirit of another boy from his school as they try to work out what is going on。 But aside from the world building and characterisation which was really well done, what made this book stand out is the LGBTQ+ themes。 It is really lovely to see a trans main character in any book, but what I especially loved about this book is that the focus was not focused on the character coming to terms with this or coming out to their family, but rather these events take place in the aftermath of this。 After the death of his mother who was his strongest defender, the main character does have a loving family but it is still taking them a little while to get used to using the right pronouns, and just adjusting their attitudes towards their son。 But you also see the daily issues that confront him, like having to wear a chest binding, being able to use the men’s toilets, getting people to use his male name rather than his “dead name” etc。 So as much as I wish that the plot and story was darker and more adult (which is my normal complaint with a YA), in this case I think that it is really important that this is a book that young adult readers can read and provide understanding of what it means to be a transgender teen。This is probably a 4。5⭐️, and the only reason that I marked it down is that the ending was incredibly predictable - we were given a clue about half way through which made the ending obvious, and it was not hard to guess who was behind it all。 So overall this was a fantastic read and would highly recommend it! 。。。more

Intensely soft and bright, don't miss itI've been hearing about this book for a over year, from Booktubers, social media, and following the author themself。 I have a horrible habit of buying Kindle ebooks and just have them collect digital dust within my library。 Recently, though, I took the plunge and finally managed to read this, and it was definitely worth it。I will fiercely protect the main couple of this story; Yadriel and Julian complement each other so well。 They are a pitch perfect oppos Intensely soft and bright, don't miss itI've been hearing about this book for a over year, from Booktubers, social media, and following the author themself。 I have a horrible habit of buying Kindle ebooks and just have them collect digital dust within my library。 Recently, though, I took the plunge and finally managed to read this, and it was definitely worth it。I will fiercely protect the main couple of this story; Yadriel and Julian complement each other so well。 They are a pitch perfect opposites-attract couple。 As someone with anxiety and an introverted sense of nature, I cheered for Yadriel's throughout the story。The depiction of culture and how the magic system was intertwined with it was endlessly joyful and magical throughout。A few other reviews I've looked mentioned some disappointment over the murder mystery aspect of the story, but in defense of that, the center of the story wasn't truly about that。 The story is primarily about acceptance, self-worth and importance, and willing to carve yourself into existence, others be damned。 Was the murder mystery as focused as the romance? No。 But that didn't bother me one bit。Go read this for the brilliantly tender romance, joyous magic, and awesome cover art。 It's worth everyone's time。 。。。more

Really solid, fun coming-of-age that was exactly the kind of thing I needed to combat the stress of an ending semester。 There were, admittedly, some slow moments toward the 3/4 mark, but the ending was super engaging and well-done。 The most impressive part of the whole book, however, was how technically well-executed each character was。 I can't think of another book from my recent reads that had such realistic, well-developed, human characters with genuine, natural development。 Julian in particu Really solid, fun coming-of-age that was exactly the kind of thing I needed to combat the stress of an ending semester。 There were, admittedly, some slow moments toward the 3/4 mark, but the ending was super engaging and well-done。 The most impressive part of the whole book, however, was how technically well-executed each character was。 I can't think of another book from my recent reads that had such realistic, well-developed, human characters with genuine, natural development。 Julian in particular was so fantastically executed, with layers peeled back organically as the story progressed until you reach the end, look back, and realize his "real" character is so wholly different from his introduction all without a single jarring moment in the entire novel。 Yadriel and Maritza were also incredibly genuine, and even when the story felt at its dullest the trio of teens kept me engaged。 Overall, a really great book。 。。。more

Yay for representation and yay for smart-mouthed protagonists, but I wanted more of the paranormal element and the middle lagged, imo。

This is a low 4 stars for me。 I enjoyed this, but honestly not as much as I thought I would。 Obviously, the message and the characters would mean more to someone who is part of the Latinx or trans community。 I think if I was part of either I would have found a faster and stronger connection with this book。 That being said I still shed tears at the end。 The romance is pretty dang cute!
